OUR HISTORY
In late 1982 / early 1983 the very ambitious and enterprising Club Committee of the time came to the decision that the Club should seriously consider the option of seeking out its own Land, construct its own Golf Course and become in control of its own destiny, and leave the annual tenancy agreement that it had with the owner of Bodenstown Golf Course, where it had been formed and where it had been in occupation since 1972/73.
Accordingly, in early 1983, the Committee viewed various possible sites and through a fortuitously series of events it came across the Land at Johnstown Estate. It entered into negotiations with the owners, and agreed a purchase price of £300,000 for the land-put a financial plan into place – agreed finance with the Bank, and then held a Special General meeting of the Members in March 1983 and which was attended by some 450 members. At that meeting the Members gave unanimous approval for the move and Beech Park came into being.
The new course was designed by the well-known Irish golf architect, Eddie Hackett, on 6400 yards with a par of 72 and with the enthusiastic help of many of the members, a temporary course of nine holes was playable by July of 1983. The full course was not opened until the summer of 1985.
In the interim the members had to depend on Open competitions in other clubs for their playing activities. The club remained affiliated to the G.U.I. retaining the name “Bodenstown Golf Club” and with members retaining their existing handicaps. However within a few months of the move, it was decided to change the name to “Beech Park Golf Club” to reflect it’s new environment and new home.
A temporary Clubhouse was constructed for the members in July 1983 and this was replaced by the new permanent Clubhouse in June 1988. It was further enhanced by the provision of new locker rooms and a function area in 2001, to give the present delightful ambience that is enjoyed by both members and visitors as of today.
