Paddy Morgan investigates the relationship that Beech Park Golf Club and Irish Blind Golf have grown together over the last couple of years.
It has been difficult for golf clubs to accept visually impaired groups but that has changed in the last number of years due to Golf Ireland, Sport Ireland and Irish Government pushing inclusivity in sport. IBG are proud to be associated with Beech Park as it is the first ever partnership between a private golf club and a disability sports group. The partnership has opened many avenues for IBG especially in promotional work on social media, bringing awareness to visually impaired blind golf and been mentioned on notice boards inside Beech Park Golf Club.
May 2019 was the first year for Irish Blind Golf to have an outing at Beech Park Golf Club, IBG members were most impressed with the layout of the course, the excellent standard of the greens and of course the catering facilities in the clubhouse. Beech Park tests all parts of your game but it is not an impossible challenge for middle and low handicap golfers. All the staff at Beech Park are generous with their time in making IBG feel welcome at their club. Beech Park Golf Club is a very accessible venue especially for IBG members travelling from various parts of the country. IBG played again at Beech Park in both 2020 and 2021.
Captain Paddy Morgan ,Pat Morgan Handicap Secretary and Oliver O’ Connor Secretary of Irish Blind Golf meet with PGA
Professional Mark Murphy in January 2022. The meeting was a fantastic success as they came on board with the offer of Irish Blind Golf’s annual fundraiser to be held at Beech Park Golf club in June 2022. The teams were delighted with the new venue and were very impressed with the layout and clubhouse facilities. IBG members played twice at Beech Park in 2022 with an outing in October and the first ever
Guide appreciation day in November. The appreciation day was an end of year game as a thank you to the guides of IBG. The golf course was in fantastic condition for both outings and the speed of the greens is a severe challenge at Beech Park. The greenkeeping staff do an extraordinary job in maintaining the course.
IBG members are big fans of Beech Park due to the quality of the course and practice facilities. The food is always excellent, reasonably priced and all our
members look forward to having a well-earned bite to eat, tea, coffee or a nice pint after a round of 18 holes. IBG committee met up again with Beech Park’s General Manager David Callanan & PGA Professional Mark Murphy in December 2022 to further cement our unique relationship and plan 2023 schedule. The 2023 Irish Blind Golf Classic was a fantastic success on Friday 30th of June at Beech Park Golf Club. 23 teams participated which was the biggest ever attendance for IBG yearly classic. Having a bigger turn out at the fundraiser means Irish Blind Golf were able to sent more participants to International Blind Golf Events. IBG was represented with two members at the World Championship’s, three players in Sweden and five at the British Open in England this year along with eight members playing in the ISPS Handa Spanish Blind Open. Irish Blind Golf are holding the ISPS Handa Irish Blind Open at Mount Wolseley from September 10th to the 14th. This will be the biggest visually impaired blind sporting event in Ireland. There will be 31 players represented from nine countries which includes the winner of the World Championship’s and British Open along with our own Ed Maguire the winner of the Scandinavian Open.
The relationship with Beech Park has helped immensely in raising awareness and promoting Irish Blind Golf. Through the relationship with Beech Park and come & try sessions at Elmgreen IBG has an average of eight members at monthly outings. Members of IBG are looking forward to their monthly outing in September and guide Appreciation Day in October both at Beech Park Golf Club. Irish Blind Golf plan to continue grow membership through social media, word of mouth and along with the come & try sessions at both Elmgreen & Beech Park. IBG are looking forward to strengthening their relationship with Beech Park Golf Club and growing the game for visually impaired players in the coming years. Irish Blind Golf would like to express our heart felt gratitude for your continued support to IBG in promoting awareness and inclusivity. Irish Blind Golf also want to express our excitement for the future development that lies ahead as IBG continues to work together to create a more inclusive golf community.
Thank you for your generosity and kind support.
